Morenita is a deeply personal piece inspired by the Virgen de Guadalupe, the revered Mexican saint who symbolizes faith, hope, and resilience. As a devout follower of the Virgen, I’ve always felt a special connection to her, especially given that she is both an emblem of Mexican identity and a guiding light in the Catholic Church. Morenita also pays tribute to the school I attended, named after her, where my spiritual journey began.
This painting emerged from my belief that everything unfolds as it’s meant to, that we are always exactly where we need to be at the right time. I was guided by the rhythms of folk music, which shaped my color palette, infusing the piece with warmth, vibrancy, and emotion. As I worked, I began to see an abstract form take shape—one that reflected the Virgen de Guadalupe in a new light. The figure emerged not as a literal representation, but as a more fluid, ethereal presence.
Morenita speaks to the transformation of faith—from the structured devotion of childhood to the deeper, more personal spirituality of adulthood. What once began as a child’s religious certainty has evolved into a mature understanding of the divine, one that is rooted in the heart and guided by wisdom, love, and inner peace. This piece is a reflection of my spiritual journey—an invitation to embrace the divine in all its forms and to trust that we are exactly where we are meant to be.
